I've fallen into the Merlin fandom, it's fantastic and I love it.

Meta & Episode Reviews  By crabby_lionesswho knows her legends very well.

Based off the Arthurian myths, the only change it makes is having Merlin the same age as Arthur, every other difference in a character, be it class, colour, position or alliance can be drawn back to one legend or another.

A main point of the series is that magic is outlawed in Camelot and anyone that is found using it is executed.  Arthur is either unaware that Merlin uses magic or he is deliberately remaining silent about it.  Many fics focus on the revelation (such as Night and Light and the Half Light by the_moonmothwhich is set after the events of 1x13), but just as often it's a side issue (as in The Weight of Words by waldorph, this fic is mostly about politics, Arthur getting what he wants, and Merlin and Arthur being good influences on each other. But I love the revelation sequence in it).

Some fics endeavour to breach the gap between story and legend such as Onfindan  by astolatwhich starts with Merlin losing control of his powers and ends with more than a glimpse of the king Arthur will be.

the main form of AU in the fandom is (unsurprisingly) the Modern Day AU. A wonderful example of this is Easy There.
Easy There by syllicis a rowing AU set at Oxford University.  In all honesty this is the fic which bound me to this fandom.  It's a powerful fic in terms of character, description, and technique and has strongly shaped the characters for me.  (Besides all this, I would beg bride_of_listerto read at least the first chapter of, it describes things I have consistently failed to.  Perhaps afterwards you'll understand my love for being on the water)
